Laser cut Police Box (aka TARDIS)

By » 4 Comments

Working on a 1/12 scale Police Box for my kids since they started playing Doctor Who (no really, honest.)

Based on pictures of the 50′s era Police Box, but lots of liberties taken to make it easy to laser cut. First version was 1/8 scale to make it easier to figure out the cuts.

Laser cut from 3mm hardboard and assembled with a bit of glue, but mostly it press-fits together.

Learning to carve pumpkins that don’t suck

By » 2 Comments

As you all should be aware, KwartzLab (in kind co-operation with THEMUSEUM, and the generous sponsorship of the KWAwesome Fund) is hosting Hacky Hallowe’en, a carving-soldering-hacking skills workshop, on Saturday October 29. As part of this workshop, we’ll be teaching you (yes, YOU!) how to safely carve intricate designs into a pumpkin. Of course, in order to pass this wisdom down, some of us ‘Labbers first needed to learn the skill ourselves.

KwartzLab friend and pumpkin carving guru, Jeff-o, held such a workshop for us on Wednesday evening. And as a graduate of the kitchen knife & stitches school of pumpkin carving, I was first in line! I’ll share some of the tips we learned after Hacky Hallowe’en. In the meantime, however, you can take a peek at our technique!

Pumpkins are tasty.

Awesome-looking pumpkins, that don't require blood sacrifice.

Hello Hacklab.to!

Hello Hacklab.to

There’s a rule of thumb in the hackerspace community – hold your open house on Tuesday. It’s completely arbitrary. No matter what day of the week you do pick for your open house, there will be someone who just can’t make it. Many just pick Tuesday by convention and no more thought is needed. Unfortunately, it makes it hard to visit other spaces since members generally want to be at home base for the open house. But since I was out of town with no hopes of making it to Kwartzlab, I had a perfect excuse to take a Tuesday to visit Hacklab.to.

Lightning Photography

Lightning Photography

I remember reading an amazing article in National Geographic back in the early ’90s about lightning. There were a handful of brilliant photographs, but the one that really grabbed me was a night shot overlooking a city as a storm front moved in, capturing 30 or more forks of lightning over a 30-second exposure. I’m no photographer (as I am happy to admit at every available opportunity), but when I saw an incredible storm front moving in on the evening of the 24th, I couldn’t resist trying to create some of my own photographs of lightning.
