Stuff kwartzlab needs

The three core elements of kwartzlab are people, projects, tools. We've established the first two and now we are working hard to build out our capabilities through tool acquisition. Our plan is to equip the space with sufficient tools and materials so that we can go from idea to prototype in a matter of hours. Below is a non-exhaustive list of tools on our capabilities roadmap that directly support rapid prototyping. If you would like to accelerate our progress through donations of tools, materials, or money, please contact the board (info@kwartzlab.ca)

Tools

Big Ticket Rapid Prototyping Tools

  • PCB mill
    • LPKF [1]
      • These are the best in the industry, feature wise -Jb 04:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
    • T-Tech [2]
      • Lower priced, less features. Haven't used personally -Jb 04:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
    • Chinese equivalent (CNCZone might have info)
  • CNC router
    • ShopBot [3]
    • Homemade? CNCZone has lots

Workhorse Tools

  • Drill press
  • Band saw

Soldering Tools

  • Solder station
    • Weller WD1000M [4]
  • Hot air rework station
    • Madell 850D [5]
      • A1130 & A1170 nozzles
  • Microscope
    • Madell SZM7045TR is decent [6]
    • A trinocular scope with video camera would be great for demonstrations
    • Can contact original manufacturer in China to get a bigger discount (was quoted $255ea for 6 about a year ago) -Jb 04:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

Materials

Fabrication Materials (consisting of end-cuts, end-of-run, not-quite-spec)

  • aluminum (angle, bar, tube, channel, plate - it's all useful and easy to work)
  • plastics (acrylic sheet and rod, as well as machinable plastics like Delrin)

Fasteners

  • machine screws, nuts, washers

Electronic Components

  • microcontrollers
  • digital/analog IC's (inverters, MUX, op-amps, h-bridges, etc)
  • discrete FET and bipolar transistors
  • passives (resistors, capacitors, inductors)
