Current Situation

The rear door is locked with a conventional deadbolt.

Problems

1. An issue was highlighted when a member misplaced his keys, and temporarily replaced the lock. During this period, members who had only a key, not a keycard, were unable to get into the space. It highlighted the fact that the electronic lock on the front door was easily bypassed by people who had a key. Ex-members who did not surrender the key would still have access to the space. If a key was lost, the lock would have to be changed, and each member that still did not have a card would need to be issued one.

2. Because of the nature of the deadbolt, those who came in or out had to remember to lock the door.

Solution - Storeroom Lock

One option is to purchase a storeroom lock, and keep the keys with board members. This lock cannot be kept unlocked, as a spring re-locks the deadbolt when a key is not turned. Also, it has a tapered end to lock the door once it is shut. This addresses #2, but not #1. A Grade 2 lock is priced at about $60.

Solution - Second Keycard Lock

Another keycard lock can be installed there to only allow access to keycard holders. This would address both concerns. One caveat is that this door would be out of service when the power is out. The main door can still be accessed with a key, however.
