The Basic Idea

Ubuntu is cool, and does well on a Live DVD. Why not make one that has lots of games, then we can have a LAN Party where people bring in any computer and they don't have to worry about installing games.

Installation Instructions

You can install Ubuntu in Windows by using Wubi. If you do this, make sure that your disk is more than 10 GB. The games alone take up 5. You can then either install games individually, or install them all using the metapackage.

To use the metapackage, go to System -> Administration -> Software Sources, enter your password, go to the Other Software tab, choose Add..., then enter the following into the box: deb http://gerlach.ca/ubuntu/apt lanparty main. Click Add Source then Close. Reload your software list when it asks. Then go to System -> Administration -> Synaptic Package Manager. In the Quick Search box, type lan-testing. Install that package. Warning: the lan-testing package requires 2.5GB of downloads and over 4GB of disk space!

Game List

I went through the Ubuntu games list and found some multiplayer games.

Discarded Games

  • antigravitaattori - Multiplayer flying saucer game (Not network - only hotseat)
  • attal - Turn-based strategy (Crap)
  • ktron - Tron Light Cycles (Single Player Only)
