Kwartzlab Growth Plan
This is a formal Business Growth Plan for Kwartzlab, created using resources from the Waterloo Region Small Business Centre.
We will use this plan to guide our efforts to grow our membership and improve our facilities. We will also use this plan to convince potential sponsors and funding agencies that we know what we are doing, and that their donations will be used effectively.
We will improve this plan by getting help from experts in the local business community. To start with, we will book a meeting with a consultant at the Small Business Centre.
To grow Kwartzlab, we need to look at where we are, where we have been and where we want to go. We must clearly identify our objectives and define the steps we will need to take to achieve them.
Kwartzlab is a makerspace. It is a community operated meeting place and workshop, where people can meet and work on projects. Kwartzlab's core purpose is to be a club for people who self-identify as "makers", and to promote the do-it-yourself ethic and Maker activities within the local community. Kwartzlab is part of a larger international cultural movement. Makers are creative people who make things. The Maker movement includes hundreds of makerspaces world wide, as well as Make magazine, and Maker Faires.
Kwartzlab is a member run co-operative, with an elected board of directors, and is registered as a non-profit corporation. Members pay $50 per month dues, and have voting rights. Members also have a key, with 24 hour access to the lab. Non-members may enter the lab during public events, or as the guest of a member.
Kwartzlab offers the following services to the community:
- a community workshop
- Tools for working with wood, metal, electronics, and textiles. Digital fabrication tools, including a 3D printer, a laser cutter, a vinyl cutter, and CNC milling machines.
- a meeting place
- Kwartzlab is a place for makers and enthusiasts of all kinds to meet, socialize and collaborate. We have a lounge with sofas and video games, a meeting room with chairs and a digital projector, and beverages for sale. We have a public open house every Tuesday, as well as games nights, movie nights and parties for members. We provide space for other community groups to hold meetings or special events.
- Kwartzlab has regularly scheduled presentations and workshops, open to the public, where you can hear about interesting projects or learn how to make things. We occasionally run outreach activities and public events outside of the lab.
- opportunities for volunteers
