Toolroom Reconfiguration

The tool room is in dire need of de-junking and intelligent organization. This is currently scheduled for Saturday, April 23, 2011

Floorplan

A raw layout is available in PNG format and XCF format.

The toolroom floor should be divided into logical sections:

  • Woodworking
  • Machining
  • Welding
  • Vented area for painting and "smelly" work
  • Large, flat workspaces
  • Shelves for storage of raw materials and member bins

Power

  • Run 220V cable for the arc welder and pottery kiln
  • Run 120V cable for lighting
  • Run 120V cable to outlets around the room
  • Run 120V cable to the ceiling for the retractable outlets

Lighting

  • Need to install new lights for strong, even lighting.
  • Will require running new wire from the panel.
  • Existing lights that we don't have a switch for should be rewired to an interior circuit.

Woodworking Area

  • The miter saw should be given enough room to be easily operated, bolted to a workbench, and have a supporting feed table built

Table saw

The table saw is ultra-dangerous in its current configuration. It needs

  • Emergency push-button stop (can be salvaged from one of the PCB mill cabinets)
  • Protective fence around the drive belt
  • Bolted down to its table
  • Locking wheels to stop it from moving around while in use
  • A sled and feed in/feed out table so it can be operated with hands well away from the blade
  • A blade guard

Shelving

  • The metal shelves currently in the lounge can be moved into the toolroom
  • More shelves will likely need to be built
  • Raw materials can be stored in labelled bins on the shelves, like this Mythbusters-inspired shelving in Tech Shop Menlo Park: Bin%20Wall%20Full%20of%20Parts%20and%20Materials.jpg

Volunteers

  • Alex W
  • Ben B

General Space Prep

General tasks that need to be done around the space, in case you are looking for a project to work on.

Plumbing

  • Need small water heater for sink(s)

Floors

  • Workshop floor needs to be possibly sealed
  • Floor in lounge area could be coated with something to prevent wear and splintering (rubberized paint?)
