We’ve finally gotten confirmation that we can set up our Stitch’n'Bitch session on King Street in front of Queen of Hearts Costumes. It’ll be in conjunction with car-free Sunday, so there will be people wandering about and checking out what we do!

The street closes at 10:30 a.m.; as our setup is pretty minimal (as far as I know, just us and our chairs and maybe a folding table?), we can get ready just before then, and set ourselves down once the street has been closed. The street will open again at 3:00 p.m. so strike will begin at 2:45 p.m. to be sure we can get out of the way. In the interim, we plan to yarnbomb the lamppost outside QoH. For those not in the know, “yarnbombing” is the decoration of public stuff with stitched stuff (usually knit/crochet) – you have probably seen it around K-W already.

All you need to bring is yourself and your stitchery – crochet, knitting, cross-stitch, tatting, latch-hook, crewel, whatever you do! – and something to sit on. You may also want to bring your own refreshments.

So, to summarise:

Date: Sunday, September 18th
Time: 10:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact me at katchan@lilbluekat.net or Stephanie at punkin@mag3.14519.ca.

See you there!

Lots of fun as always – we gathered at 1 pm; Steph, Dave, Caelyn and I (and Gus for a while!) sat around chatting and watching old movies (They Live, Alien Nation, Dark City) and some TV on DVD (The Outer Limits)), while we worked (though Gus didn’t stitch).

Dave worked on a knitted black-and-white striped blanket; Caelyn on a beautiful dark blue knitted sweater; Steph on her delicate tatting in a couple of colours; and me, on a crochet cotton “spa” set (face scrubber, soap bag, bath pouf and hand towel).

Unfortunately we were quite engrossed in our work and ended up not taking photos while we were there. So Steph has kindly sent a picture of one of her tatted pieces:

Steph's pretty tatted bracelet

And I took a picture of just the soap bag for detail on the crochet and on the cotton yarn itself.

Katchan's crocheted soap bag

Good time had by all, despite the last-minute schedule change from Saturday to Sunday. ^_^

The state of the workroom area, about halfway through the afternoon. Sorry I didn't get a more panoramic view. :)

So the Soldering Workshop (hosted by DW and prepared/presented by DW, James and Andrew) was way more fun than I'd even expected, and I got to walk away with a blinky light thingy (complete with battery pack to light it up).

I've done some soldering before, with jewellery, but haven't done anything involving electronics, so while the soldering itself wasn't a huge challenge for me, making sure everything was wired right and soldered securely kept me on my proverbial toes. I'm sure that DW got a picture of me glaring over my glasses at the circuit board, my tongue stuck out in concentration.

Steph took tonnes of pictures that I hope to see soonish, of the workshop in progress and close-ups of the work itself - once we learned to solder wires together (as practice), we were each given a Wee Blinky kit to assemble.

Thanks for putting together such a fab workshop, guys! As DW pointed out, this should be our last "outside" workshop - from now on we should be able to hold them at the hackerspace itself. :)
