Would you join KwartzLab if we had a laser cutter?
By Eric Gerlach
We’ve been discussing what to get next at KwartzLab, and the consensus has come down that a Laser Cutter would be awesome. We’re going to apply to the CEEO for a grant, and one of the pieces of data we’d like to include is how many more members we’d get if we got a Laser Cutter.
So tell us how one would affect your decision to join!

Ummm, how ’bout explaining what it could do!!
A quote from jb: “Laser cutters are a powerful and versatile tools for makers. A laser can cut and engrave a wide range of materials such as wood, plastic, paper, textiles, etc.”
The equipment Kwartzlab has is really a secondary consideration for me – it’s already an awesome space with great people as far as I’m concerned. For me, at this point in my life, the monthly cost to join is of more concern than anything.
As far as things it can do, have a look at what people have been uploading to Thingverse under the “laser cutter” category for some inspiration:

There’s some really cool stuff there, like this chess set (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:20), a Hex Connector Toy (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:247, some really neat laptop stands (http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:892) and all kinds of containers and boxes for things. Super cool.
It’s hard for me to afford to join, since the monthly membership fee is roughly equivalent to what I spend on materials and for my projects (perhaps more). So I’d be faced with a decision – access to the space but unable to afford to make anything, or stay at home and make what I like?
I certainly do like the idea of a pay-per-use laser cutter though. I would use that service.
