James Nye’s Paintings
By DW
James Nye’s paintings really blew my hair back tonight. He’s having an open house at his studio at 8 Water St. North in Kitchener. First session was tonight (thu) and you can still catch him on Saturday June 19 from 5pm to 10pm. Go check it out.
More after the break…
Here’s James at left talking with our Bevan. I met James when he came by TON at the lab to see Bernie Rohde’s opening.
My camera is totally not doing justice to these pieces. The colour is amazing.
James has created this really intriguing combination of street art and window-like reflections that suggest all sorts of ideas to me.
My broheme was in on the mission.
As was Ben (left).
The juxtaposition of the very deliberate and orderly architectural reflection with the immediate and edgy street art illustrates an interesting tension you will find in just about any city.
The trompe-l’oeil of the reflection really messed with my head. Made me have to consciously focus on the two planes of the work.
Interesting that the street art gets the more vibrant colour. Is it more real? Is James observing with these reflections that street art is a reflection of the actual people that inhabit these worlds?
Lewis was the consummate host.
Definitely check out this show.
Happy making,
DW
