The 5 + 5 event was really fun. Great turnout and great energy. Thanks to all who participated by speaking, prepping, watching, and helping spread the word. If you liked it, email me. To get in the loop on our events you can follow me on Twitter. You can also follow kwartzlab.

Photos by me and Ed Maste (thanks Ed!)

More after the break…

Our speakers: here’s Gus talking about his experiment hanging art in kwartzlab

Standing room only, the crowd spilled around the corner into the lounge.

Then Denise Strong, our friend from Behind the Red Door Studio (just upstairs), talked about her amazing… cement pieces.

The pictures don’t do it justice. Denise’s work just seems to float and has the most beautiful detail, belying their cement and wire-mesh skeletons.

And the work comes in all kinds of forms.

Then James Bastow talked about his design and build…

of the kwartzlab RFID access system.

IMG_1531

wowing the crowd…

with his fly-wiring kung fu. We’ll use James’ system for door access and power-tool lockout at the lab.

Next up was Cathy Farwell, our friend and neighbour from upstairs, took the stage…

to talk about her work on copper, and the process she developed. These corroded copper plates she makes and uses as a “canvas” really blow my hair back.

Thanks to Cathy’s husband, Roger Farwell (at left), for helping bring all this stuff downstairs to our lab.

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 040

Alex Williams dazzled the crowd with his software and explorations with…

different musical…

scales.

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 045

Hey, there’s Seth Hardy, all the way from T.O.

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 046

We took a short break… (Ernest and Melissa)

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 047

No pictures please! ;-) (Marcel)

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 014

Thanks to Ed Maste for half of these photos. Ed’s got my back!

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 050

Dave White’s in the house, my brother from the very same mother.

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 052

Starting up again, Jack Jackowetz talked…

IMG_1556

about his work that is currently hanging at kwartzlab. Enhanced-reality photography. Powerful.

IMG_1559

I got to chat about my animeyes project. I get pretty animated myself talking about the work. Go strawlenoid!

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 054

Sarah Kernohan dazzled us…

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 058

with an old-school overhead showing…

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 059

of her drawings, and the process of making them.

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 060

Our Karl Williams jumped in with his robots.

IMG_1582

Demo! Karl’s a great blend of artist/engineer/maker.

Dave White! talks about…

his work…

And after the scheduled talks, then the real experiment… (DW and Marcel)

of mixing up this crowd… (Paul and Sarah)

kwartzlab_5_plus_5_Jan2010 074

Happy making,
