KW Surplus is more a clearence warehouse than an actual surplus store in the Army sense of the word. they sell everything from camping supplies, tools, kitchenware, electronics, computers, paintball markers and accessories, toys, generators and raw materials.

At the risk of complicating the picture, I’d add Sayal Electronics as well. KW Surplus is great for a lot of hardware, but it’s not like you can buy PCB etching kits and LEDs in bulk.

    But you already knew that.

oh hay, it worked! I added some of my favourite shops. I tried to make it into a scenic tour around the region :)

It didn’t apply the labels, but here they are:
    A: Kwartzlab
    B: KW Surplus
    C: Metal Supermarket
    D: Sayal Electronics
    E: Cambridge ReStore
    F: Princess Auto

I add them, and then save to My Maps and choose hackerspace , but when I reload the map from this blog post my stuff is gone. No doubt a PEBCAK.

    Need to add:

    * Knell Door & Hardware – 2090 Shirley Drive, Kitchener – awesome tools, no counter minimum, great for numbered drills (which if you ask at Home Depot will just get puzzled stares)

    * Fastenal – 1215 Victoria St., Unit 1, Kitchener – great for fasteners, no counter minimum, they’ll happily order you anything for free even in small quantities. Good supply of different metal stock like flat bar, angle, etc, but price compare with Metal Supermarket first. Great catalog available for free.
    * Spaenaur – 815 Victoria Street North, Kitchener – lots and lots of fasteners, but $32 counter minimum. Much better price on hex nuts and washer than Home Depot, but much worse price on, say, the actual machine screws.
    * The Beer Store – 490 King St W, Kitchener – obviously
    * Swanson’s HomeHardware – 166 Park Street, Kitchener – your average hardware store, but close to kwartzlab, especially by bike if you follow the train tracks.

I was going to create just such a map, once the amenities page was online. That way people can see what we offer, and what’s nearby, all on the same page ;)

I’m also working on one for the [contacts page](http://kwartzlab.ca/contact/boehmer) which will show nearby parking & bus stops.

    Going by memory…

    - Click to go to maps.google.com

    - Add your updates as destinations on the list on the left side

    - Once that’s all done, press “Link” on the upper right

    - You should see some HTML code that begins with IFRAME… I think under “Paste HTML to embed in website”

    - Paste that HTML into a post here.

    - Success! Hopefully!

I’ve bought a few dollars worth of stuff at SpaeNaur dozens of times. There’s no minimum. Also, you need to know exactly what you’re buying – their screws might seem cheaper, but they are higher quality in most cases.

It’s also a good place to get numbered drills (even tiny ones for drilling PCBs) and other assorted cabinet hardware, springs, tools, lubricants, adhesives…

It’s definitely one of my favourite stores!

The best place for lumber that I know of in this area is (unfortunately) in Guelph – Knight Lumber. There you’ll find both large and small pieces of a very wide assortment of lumber, great for furniture making and other carpentry. They also have various sizes of Baltic Birch plywood, which is fantastic for making things like mechanical movements out of wood.

On the way to Knight Lumber is the Stockade. They cater to crafty types as well as woodworkers, with plenty of supplies, patterns and tools for both.

having access to their catalogue and getting the part numbers is really important when you go to the counter. As for drills and tooling, I have found that Sowa tools out on manitou drive to be the best. they have a catalogue we can get for the lab. a spaenar catalogue would be good to.

I’ve been meaning to visit Sowa Tools for a while. I need some metal working tools that I can’t find anywhere else.

I suppose it would become obviopus but it is true…this area is full of really great stores for making.
